A CV summarizes your professional experience, education, skills, and achievements for potential employers. It should show why you are a good match for a role and help you secure an interview. A job application CV, often called a resume, is usually one or two pages and prioritizes the information most relevant to the position.

The terms “CV” and “resume” are often used interchangeably, but their meaning varies by country. A resume is usually a short, targeted summary of your skills and experience. An academic CV may include a more detailed record of education, research, publications, and achievements. In most European countries, “CV” is the standard term for a job application document.

Choose a CV template that suits your industry, experience, and target role. A clean, professional layout works well for most jobs, while a more distinctive design may suit a creative field. The best CV templates make key information easy to find, maintain a clear visual hierarchy, and stay readable across devices. ModernCV lets you compare designs and choose one that fits your professional profile.

For most professionals, a CV should cover the last 10 to 15 years of relevant experience. Shorten or remove older positions if they no longer support your career goals. Recent graduates can include internships, education, academic projects, and volunteer work. Prioritize the experience and achievements that best support your application.

An ATS-friendly CV is structured so applicant tracking systems can read and organize its content. Many employers use these systems to process job applications before a recruiter reviews them. Clear section headings, readable fonts, relevant keywords, and a logical layout improve compatibility. Avoid unnecessary graphics and complex formatting when applying through an ATS. ModernCV offers clean CV templates that keep your information clear and accessible.

A one-page CV is often enough for students, recent graduates, and professionals with limited experience. Candidates with longer or more specialized careers may need two pages to present relevant work and achievements. Every section should add useful information for the employer. Keep the writing concise, prioritize recent experience, and remove details unrelated to your target role.

PDF is usually the best format for a CV because it preserves the layout, fonts, and spacing across devices and operating systems. Most employers and recruitment platforms accept it. Always check the job posting, however, because some employers request a DOCX file. When no format is specified, a clearly named PDF CV is generally the safest choice.

You do not need to create a new CV from scratch for every application, but you should tailor it to each position. Review the job description and emphasize the skills, experience, and achievements that match the employer’s needs. Update your professional summary and use relevant keywords where they fit. A targeted CV helps recruiters understand why you suit the role.
